Hacking the Hashtag – Part III

We’ve made it to the end of our summer mini-series of hacking the hashtag! Who knew something so tiny could make such a difference, right? In our first installment, we talked about the importance of using hashtags that attract potential clients as opposed to only using hashtags that peers or fellow industry professionals would utilize. In today’s final installment of Hacking the Hashtag, we’ll look at how to figure out what hashtags your dream clients are using, and how to implement that into your Instagram marketing practices.

Who is your dream client? What do they do for a living? What podcasts do they listen to? Where do they shop? What is their style? Depending on your industry, those questions will be different, but the concept remains the same; when you have a clear understanding of who your dream client is, you are provided with instant insight into things they may be searching for on Instagram.

For example, if you make handmade children’s clothing, you could use the hashtags #handmadechildrensclothing #childrensclothing #childrensclothes – the basics. Some people would certainly find you, but let’s take it a few steps further. Who might be searching for children’s clothing? Moms? That’s an easy one, but who else may be looking for specialty handmade items? Possibly a photographer, maybe an online publication; do you see where we’re going here? The possibilities are only limited to your imagination. Use that handy dandy search bar we previously talked about, type in the word or phrase you want to use, select to search tags, and your screen will be filled with all kinds of hashtags you can use to enhance your post and extend your reach.

And with that, my friends, we are at the end of our journey with Hacking the Hashtag. With these tips in your back pocket, you’ll be well on your way to expanding your Instagram presence and attracting more potential clients. Now #gettowork!
