Three Things to Keep in Mind When Creating Content

I’ve said it before and I stand by it: creating content for your website can be one of the most difficult parts of not only building a website but keeping it up-to-date. The content on your website should be consistently updated and should evolve as your organization does. Here are three things to keep in mind when creating content for your site.

1. Your website isn’t for you.

Your website may be about you and your business, but your website isn’t for you. It’s for your users. Creating content that will attract and hold the attention of the clients you want requires you to know your audience and their habits. If your target audience is 18-35 year old, for example, keep that copy brief and clear. A lot of things are competing for the attention of your audience, so creating your content based on who they are instead of who you are is vital to grabbing and holding attention in order to convert.

2. You must define your purpose.

The single most important thing when writing content is to understand its purpose. Knowing your end goal from the beginning helps you craft the perfect piece of content and an ideal call-to-action statement. If you’re unsure of your purpose, ask yourself what your website is intended to do (sell something, lead generation, attract subscribers, etc.) and go from there.

3. Know your competitors.

It’s always a good idea to do some research on the websites of your competitors. People have a lot of options and it’s likely that visitors to your website will also be considering your competition. You will need to make a strategic decision about whether you want to offer similar content or branch out and offer something different. This can also be an excellent way to spot trends among your competitors and be a step ahead.

Although it can seem daunting, I hope these three things to keep in mind when creating content get you started off on the right foot. If not, we are happy to help with all of your content writing needs. Reach out whenever you need us!
